Most Floridians will tell you that the Emerald Coast is as close as you are going to get to varied seasons in the beautiful state of Florida. Our summer's high's are usually in the 90s with cooled off evenings in the low 80s. Winter time we can actually get a little chilly with high's as low at the 50s with nightly chills in the 40s with the occasional freeze. The only white stuff you will find is the quartz sand at our beaches. Remember, you are in the tropics - the humidity tends to intensify how cold or hot it may feel.
Fun fact, June grass isn't really grass and it doesn't alway appear in June. It's actually a form of algae and completely harmless. It's necessary for marine life and some locals swear that it has healing powers.
A lot of locals love Peppers- a local Mexican restaurant. Other's enjoy the Bavarian that hosts live German music on the weekends. Another favorite is Rick's Crab Trap which has some amazing seafood dishes.
Okaloosa Island has great access to the beach at a few different areas with great parking.
There are a few family-friendly charters out of Two George's Marina and many at Harbor Walk Village in Destin.
A local will tell you to do one or all of the following:
*Rub sand on the affected area
*Open a cigarette and put the tobacco on the sting
*Apply vinegar to the sting
*Use tylenol as a pain releiver if the above don't work for you
You can go surf fishing, but for the safety of swimmers, try and do this away from swimmers. We highly recommend the Okaloosa Island Pier. There is a nominal fee for entry. You can rent fishing gear and get everything you need to have a blast fishing from the pier. **You will need a fishing license. You can obtain one by going online. Cliick here for information
There are many boat rentals along Hwy 98 and across from Crab Island in Destin.
Most of the CVS pharmacies in the area have minute clinics for colds and simple injuries. Nearest Emergency room is likely to be HCA Ft Walton or Twin Cities Hosptial unless you are in Destin, there is an HCA Destin and Sacred Heart near San Destin
